Job Description


Develops, designs, builds, upgrades, installs, maintains and tunes all production databases. Additional responsibility includes maintaining development, test, stage and backup database environments. Additionally, expected to be a development-operations team lead supporting the on-going continuous delivery of the application portfolio.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Plans, coordinates, and executes the installation of patches, new releases, and upgrades of corporate and customer-facing database software to ensure optimal performance and security.
Manages and maintains databases on continuous basis to meet Microsoft best-practice maintenance requirements to ensure optimal performance and uptime.
Performs trend analysis of system performance on a regular basis and recommends configuration changes to identify and correct performance issues.
Provides consulting, technical advice and problem resolution for the software development team on issues related to the development of database application programs and system interfaces.
Works with development-operations teams as Subject Matter Expert.
Participates in the review of new logical and physical design specifications to identify impacts on enterprise database structures and their accessibility for existing and new applications, including providing recommendations on sizing, growth planning and scalability issues.
Builds databases, tables, views, stored procedures, triggers and functions.
Profiles databases for performance, troubleshooting and security purposes.
Configures and builds distributed transactions, replications, and DTS packages.
Sets up security for databases, including users, groups, roles and rights.
Provides support to other members of the systems administration team. Acts to improve system usability and functionality.
Monitors trends and developments in database management and storage technologies.
Consults with vendors and other sources on industry and product direction, functionality and capabilities.
Conducts research on new technologies and their applicability to the Company’s database environment.
Plays an active role in the development of strategies for the design, development and administration of data management systems and processes, database architectures and data storage technologies in line with the Company’s strategic technology plan.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or related field or equivalent technical experience.
Microsoft SQL/DBA certifications preferred.
At least five (5) years database administration experience in a high-volume, high-availability, 24 x 7 environment, including experience in the following areas:
Experience using SQL server and Windows clustering.
Windows Server Administrator experience.
Experience creating, maintaining and administering a production Microsoft SQL Server high availability environment.
Experience with clustered, non-clustered and non-structured database systems.
In-depth understanding of database design, clustering, T-SQL, and related programming languages, backup/restore technologies, replication, ETL/DTS/SSIS, MSDTC, full-text search and security.
Deep technical database design, performance tuning, and troubleshooting skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-departmental representatives.
Good time management and organizational skills.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and critical thinking.
Good presentation skills with the ability to influence others.
Ability to work on multiple projects as a project leader or advisor.
Ability to discern and define key aspects of a problem and develop a solution within a broad technical and business context.
Working knowledge of project management techniques.
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
U.S. Citizenship required.
Must live in the US 3 of the last 5 years (military and study abroad accepted).
Ability to pass a federal background check and obtain a suitability determination.
Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to information stored in operational databases.
Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
