Animal Services Supervisor

Summary of Position
The Animal Services Division and Monterey County Health Department has an opening for an Animal Services Supervisor at the Animal Services Center in Salinas. Under direction, The Animal Services Supervisor selects, evaluates, disciplines, assigns, and trains staff who perform animal control field activities and/or who care for animals and maintain the shelter operation of the animal shelter; plans, coordinates and supervises implementation of assigned animal services activities; and does other work as required.

Animal Services protects, promotes, and enhances the health, safety, and quality of life for companion animals and people within Monterey County. Animal Services provides an animal shelter, spay/neuter clinic, and field services; treatment, control, and prevention of diseases in animals; dog and cat licensing; public education about animal care, and adoption of animals.

The Eligible List established by this recruitment process will be used to fill current and future vacancies, both regular and temporary, as they arise in the Health Department.

Examples of Duties
Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Effectively supervise, train and evaluate staff to maintain and operate at the highest level of quality and standards for animal shelter and animal control operations.
• County and State laws, ordinances, rules and regulations governing the control, protection and licensing, impound, release and euthanasia of animals.
• General care, nutrition, and control handling, of a variety of animal breeds and species.
• Safety principles, practices and procedures associated with animal handling and restraint of a variety of animals, including those, which may be ill, injured, quarantined, aggressive or difficult to control.
• Working knowledge of domestic animal diseases and disease control
• Work effectively under pressure and react quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Communicate well with staff, volunteers, the public and partner agencies.

Desirable Qualifications
Possession of or ability to obtain within six months of employment:
• Certificate of completion of Euthanasia by Injection.
• Certificate of completion of Powers of Arrest (832 P.C.).

Examples of Experience/Education/Training
Any combination of experience, education, and/or training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities, and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

Approximately one (1) year of experience performing job duties equivalent to the classification of either Senior Animal Care Technician or Senior Animal Control Officer in Monterey County.

Required Condition of Employment:
• Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record or ability to provide suitable transportation approved by the appointing authority
• The Health Department will conduct a thorough background and reference check process, which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
• Be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays in emergency situations and accept overtime duty as assigned.
• Ability to exhibit patience and care when dealing with animals; tolerate animal noise and odor.
• Ability to tolerate the humane disposition and handling of animals.
